Deep Cleaning my Closet

A journey to self-reflection and healing

This weekend, I finally took on a task I'd been avoiding for a long time: deep cleaning my closet. It was something I knew would be exhausting, both physically and emotionally. I kept putting it off, not thinking about the end result, but dwelling on all the reasons why I shouldn't do it.

Yesterday morning, I woke up feeling a sense of determination. I knew it was time to tackle this project, and I realized how closely it related to our life's journey and self-care practices, especially meditation and therapy.

To move forward and get better, we need to do a deep cleaning of our minds and hearts. It's hard to face our emotions and past traumas, just like it's hard to face a cluttered, dark closet. We avoid it because it's uncomfortable, filled with memories and items we don't want to let go of. For me, it was my high heel shoes that I can't wear anymore due to back problems, but I couldn't bring myself to get rid of them.

Deep cleaning our closet is much like dealing with our inner selves. It's about letting go of what no longer serves us. It's about facing the darkness, the things we've been avoiding. It's about taking the time to heal, just as we would in therapy or meditation. We have to be intentional about finding ways to deal with our emotions and past traumas.

I thought the task would take me two or three hours, but it ended up taking almost 12 hours. From 10 AM to 10 PM, I sorted through every item, every memory, and every piece of clothing. By the end of the day, I was exhausted. My whole body hurt, and I didn't want to do anything else.

Dealing with trauma is the same. It's not easy to start. Once we begin, we think it will be quick, but it often takes longer than expected. We just need to do it. Don't think too much about when and how—focus on the why.

My closet was so full of things I didn't need that it caused frustration whenever I tried to pick an outfit. I couldn't find shoes or make space for new items. Not dealing with past hurts and trauma does the same. It clutters our minds and hearts, preventing us from feeling free and light.

Once you start the process, it won't be easy. It will take more time than you anticipated. It will be hard. You'll probably find old things that you didn't even know were there, affecting your present. But when you're done, you'll feel free, lighter, and better.

Taking the time to deep clean my closet taught me that just like in life, we need to face the dark, cluttered spaces within ourselves. We need to let go of what no longer serves us, deal with our past hurts, and make room for new, positive things. It's a journey worth taking, and the end result is always worth the effort.

Decluttering the storage closet

A Journey of Renewal

This past weekend, I decided to tackle the dreaded task of decluttering my storage closet. You know the one—where all the things you no longer use, seasonal items, and old decorations are stored. Some of these items hold sentimental value, while others have no value at all, yet I couldn't bring myself to let go of them. It was a daunting task, and I'd been putting it off for far too long.

Starting this project was incredibly hard. I kept finding reasons to avoid it. I knew it would be exhausting and time-consuming. But I also knew it was necessary. So, I finally mustered the courage to begin.

As I opened the closet door, I was overwhelmed by the sheer volume of stuff piled up inside. I thought it would take a few hours, but as I started sorting through everything, I realized it would take much longer. Sometimes, these tasks transform into bigger projects, taking more than a day to complete.

I quickly discovered I didn't have everything I needed. I had to make several trips to get storage bins, trash bags, and cleaning supplies. It's like when we start our self-care journey—we often don't have all the tools and resources we need right away. We have to be patient and gather what we need along the way.

Once I started throwing things out and repurposing items, the process became more manageable. Some items went to donation centers, others to friends and family, and the rest went straight to the trash. It felt liberating to let go of things that no longer served me.

As the clutter cleared, I began to see the space with new eyes. I started imagining all the possibilities. Maybe I could turn this space into a cozy reading nook or a small home gym. The possibilities were endless, and the process of decluttering opened up new opportunities for self-care and renewal.

Cleaning out the storage closet reminded me of the importance of letting go. Just like our physical space, our minds and hearts can become cluttered with old memories, past hurts, and unnecessary baggage. It's essential to take the time to sort through these emotions, repurpose them, and let go of what no longer serves us.

This task was a form of self-care. It was about creating a space that reflects who I am now, not who I used to be. It was about making room for new experiences and opportunities. This type of self-care is about renewal and transformation. It's about recognizing the importance of our physical environment and how it affects our mental and emotional well-being.

In the end, the effort was worth it. The storage closet is now a space of possibility and potential. And the process of deep cleaning it was a reminder that sometimes, we need to let go of the old to make way for the new. It's a journey worth taking, and the end result is always worth the effort.
